About Geo.ly
Geo.ly launched in Spring 2009.
The philosophy behind Geo.ly is to make sharing maps simple. You don't need an account to use this service. In fact, anyone can create, annotate and save their map in less than a minute. All Geo.ly map urls are purposely short which helps make sharing them via email and on services like Twitter easy and reliable.
Geo.ly also provides a rich API allowing developers to create maps directly from their own applications. Maps can be created from latitude and longitude (GPS) coordinates or from locations (and addresses). Geo.ly will geocode almost any location and then display it as a marker on your map.
For those glued to their social networks, Geo.ly allows Twitter users to post map requests to our @geoly Twitter account. These are converted into maps and returned with a short url in the blink of an eye.
In an age where your privacy is being eroded on a daily basis, we hope you find it refreshing to use a service that actively avoids gathering personal information wherever possible. We respect your privacy and don't normally require any kind of an account to use our service.
Geo.ly operates from a cluster of servers in Amazon's computing cloud. Our system is designed to be fast and reliable but because it relies heavily on the amazing mapping functionality and APIs provided by Google and Yahoo the quality of this service is subject to the performance of and limits placed on us by those other systems.
Maps are incredibly fun and useful things. We hope you enjoy using Geo.ly to create and share your own maps with others.
